Trustee vacancy

The New Forest Heritage Trust is seeking a trustee to join its board.

Trustees are accountable for the charitable objectives of the New Forest Heritage Trust, which operates the New Forest Heritage Centre, ensuring that the Centre achieves its mission in an ethical, transparent, accountable, and prudent manner. The objectives are to describe and illustrate the historical development and distinctive nature of the New Forest for the public benefit.

Since successfully becoming a free entry museum in 2016, our footfall has increased seven-fold; we now welcome over 200,000 visitors a year.  We are at a crucial point and will shortly be undergoing a transformative redevelopment project and require trustees who can help us through this.

An expert in buildings management and maintenance or in project management would be very useful for this time.

The role will require a commitment of up to 3 hours per month, for example to attend meetings, events and to support the charity more widely. Trustee board meetings are held six times a year at the New Forest Heritage Centre; you may also be required to attend sub-committee meetings.

Key roles and responsibilities:

  • To review strategy, development, operational business, annual budgets, accounts and protocols at the Trustee Board meetings
  • To actively contribute to policy setting, strategic direction, fundraising and sustainability, staff and volunteer welfare
  • To evaluate performance against targets, budgets, plans and charitable objectives
  • To actively support, review, develop and guide building management and maintenance

What we are looking for:

  • Willingness to actively participate in discussions concerning needs of the Trust’s staff and volunteers
  • Willingness to act in the best interest of the charity while adhering to the Nolan principles of public life
  • Sound, independent judgement and ability to think creatively
  • Working effectively as a team member and demonstrating a willingness to learn and develop
  • Experience of building management and maintenance or project management

  • Strong intellectual and analytical ability; innovative thinker and ability to focus on issues requiring action
  • Experience in the charitable or voluntary sector
  • Experience of charity law and governance
