The 9 Learning Themes

The first years of a child’s life are an exciting and formative time

"I just wanted to send the most enormous thank you for today. It was just the most amazing session - thank you!"

Education group visit in 2026

At the New Forest Heritage Centre, we create meaningful learning experiences that connect pupils to history, landscape, and community. Every visit is built around our 9-module Pathways Programme — giving you the flexibility to shape learning around your curriculum while offering pupils a rich, connected understanding of the New Forest.

The Pathways Programme

One programme. Endless possibilities.

Our learning offering is built around nine core themes that run consistently across all ages.

These themes are adapted for each stage of learning—so whether you’re visiting with Early Years or Key Stage 2, pupils explore the same themes, in ways that are appropriate, engaging, and progressively more challenging.

You can choose one module, or combine several to build a full-day experience.

1. Beginnings

How did the New Forest begin?

From its origins to early stories, pupils explore how the forest was created and how it has changed over time.

2. Traditions

What makes the New Forest unique?

Discover customs, ways of life, and traditions that continue to shape the forest today.

3. Tourism (Holidays for EYFS & KS1)

Why do people visit the New Forest?

Explore how and why people have travelled to the forest for leisure, and how tourism has changed over time.

4. People

Who lives and works in the New Forest?

Learn about the people connected to the forest—past and present—and their relationship with the landscape.

5. The Forest (Landscapes)

What makes the New Forest special?

Investigate habitats, wildlife, and the natural features that define this unique environment.

6. Places (Towns & Villages)

Where are we in the New Forest?

Explore the towns and villages that make up the forest, and how people live within it.

7. War (Wildlife for EYFS & KS1)

How has conflict affected the forest?

Older pupils examine the impact of war, while younger learners explore wildlife and survival in the forest.

8. Climate (Weather & Seasons for EYFS)

How does the forest change?

From daily weather to long-term climate, pupils explore change, seasons, and environmental impact.

9. Future Forest

What happens next?

Encourage pupils to think about conservation, sustainability, and their role in protecting the forest’s future.

A learning journey that grows with your pupils

Each theme is carefully adapted for different ages:

• Early Years – sensory, play-based exploration

• Key Stage 1 – hands-on discovery and questioning

• Key Stage 2 – enquiry, interpretation, and critical thinking

This means pupils can revisit themes as they grow—deepening their understanding each time.
